Our highly popular 2009 Escape Concrete Beijing series of daytrips continues in 2010 with this being the first of the new series. At long last the weather has turned, we shed our winter coats and head for the tranquillity of the Botanical Gardens and the Wofosi Temple.

The Beijing Botanical Gardens are located northwest of downtown Beijing. The 400 hectares contain not only a large variety of rare trees and stunning flowers, but also houses a number of historical attractions. The intriguing rockeries, clear ponds and elegant bridges interspersed throughout combine to make the garden is a place of great natural beauty.
Wofosi Temple (Temple of the Reclining Buddha)
The Temple of the Reclining Buddha was first built during the Zhenguan period (627-249) of the Tang Dynasty, when it was also known as the Temple of Peaceful Longevity (Shou'ansi). The temple compound is built on an enormous scale. The famous bronze Buddha is more than five meters long. It lies in a sleeping position, with one arm extended and the other propping up its head, and is surrounded by 12 smaller Buddha. It is said that the posture of the group represents a scene in which Sakyamuni was giving instructions to his disciples under the bodhi tree while he was ill.
